Hear directly from Megan about this amazing opportunity!
Have a strategic plan but don’t use it?  Have one that’s too broad or hasn’t been implemented?  Have an overall plan but need a more specific plan for an area or program? Or haven’t delved into strategic planning yet and need to start somewhere?  This is for you.  You can choose to learn the tools for your full planning process to be completed at another time, or you can set yourself up to complete the planning process in real time throughout the workshop series! **

Every organization can benefit from strategic planning. A well-built strategic plan – whether for your organization overall or a specific aspect of your nonprofit – helps you prioritize and focus your resources effectively. It can give you the opportunity to step back, assess your current situation, and identify the KEY areas where you can make the most significant difference to help you achieve long-term success and results for our community.

Webinar Viewing: Tom Ahern – Great Donor Newsletters

“TOM AHERN … IS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER CREATORS OF FUND-RAISING MESSAGES.”
~ THE NEW YORK TIMES

GREAT DONOR newsletters: digital/print. Newsletters are donor-retention’s best friend. (And make serious money, too!)

… yes, a decent donor newsletter can be the gift that keeps on giving to your mission and those you serve …

This one-of-a-kind webinar will help: whether you hope to tune up a newsletter you already have … or are considering a launch.

Join CNL for a viewing of the recorded webinar including the Q&A, as well as our own, in person, question time with peers in the room!

Thursday, February 15th, 9:00am – 12:00pm
Bright Futures for Youth, Event Room
Cost: $25 – CNL Members;
$35 – Not-Yet-Members

… you will learn how to turn your organization’s newsletter into a powerful stewardship tool that will increase donor retention and harvest added gifts

MORE INFO from Tom about this opportunity:
When the pandemic hit, interest in donor newsletters jumped, as charities sought ways around isolation. Tom Ahern led the creative teams behind two new and highly lucrative donor newsletters introduced during pandemic times. Both are print, coordinated with companion emails. Both are written in-house (after training and ever-lighter handholding).

One is for a national charity. It now raises almost a half-million in extra gifts each time it mails. (It took about 4 issues to get it right.)
The other, for a local California charity, makes $70K+ every time it mails. (Again, it took about 4 issues.) That adds up to more than a quarter-million dollars in added charitable revenue annually for a small-ish organization.
In both cases, as the newsletters were under construction, staff was also being trained. Both these NOW successful donor newsletters are NOW written in-house.

“Would you … (maybe even your board!) like to know exactly how such stewardship ‘miracles’ happen?”

Don’t Miss this opportunity – the webinar content itself is 90 minutes; Stay for as much of the following Q&A and peer learnings as you would like!

About UnCharitable

What if charity could be transformed from a gesture to an answer–to solving the world’s greatest problems? What if everything we’ve been taught about charitable giving is wrong?

UnCharitable is a timely and crucial documentary that uncovers the realities of philanthropy and introduces a radical new way of thinking about giving. In an emotional call to action, this powerful film demands that charities be freed from traditional constraints so that they can truly change the world.

Based on the book, “UnCharitable,” by Dan Pallotta, which became one of the most talked-about TED talks of all time— it is driven by the poignant, personal stories of Dan Pallotta, Steve Nardizzi, Dorri McWhorter, Scott Harrison, Edward Norton, Darren Walker and other prominent figures in philanthropy. UnCharitable delivers an emotional journey that moves, persuades and inspires its audience to change the way we think about giving.

No topic is more crucial and timely as we confront an increasingly unstable world with the growing revelation that we are all interconnected and that our fate lies in how much we are willing to invest in positive change.

For our nonprofit leaders to consider:

An excerpt from Roxanna Ayers, CEO of Ethos Consulting Group for an article featured in the blog of the Lily Family School of Philanthropy:

“Every time I watch Pallotta’s TED Talk, and I’ve probably seen it 20 times, I’m inspired by the simple but groundbreaking idea he puts forth: overhead is actually good. This idea can feel like a seismic shift when we consider how society moralizes about how nonprofits spend their money. We’re all familiar with the argument that donors don’t want their dollars going to fund overhead expenses like marketing or salaries. In Uncharitable, Gyllenhaal provides a runway for Pallotta to bring home the full scope of repercussions nonprofits experience by the misguided idea that they should operate to keep overhead low.

UnCharitable reminds us that we do the entire conversation around nonprofit overhead a disservice when we lose sight of the human element. The film feels like the tool nonprofit professionals need to begin to do the work of fixing this broken narrative around nonprofit spending. It’s undeniable that the documentary is a call to action to all of us working in the sector. I would go a step further and say it is our ethical duty to be advocates for pushing back on these harmful misconceptions.”

Friday, April 14th, 9:00am – 12:00pm
Bright Futures for Youth, Event Room
Trainer: Becky Lunders of teamWorks
Cost: $60 – CNL Members;
$75 – Not-Yet-Members
Full Series Bundle- $100: CNL Members, $120: Non-Members
Check out Session 2 and Session 3, both offered virtually

Delegation is a critical leadership development tactic that helps teams build capacity and reduce burnout. If done well, it can take an organization from where it is to where it wants to be. If done poorly, staff and volunteers feel like they are on their own and sometimes even abandoned. This session will also address the need for leaders to engage in effective communication, regardless of the type of team, be they staff, board or volunteers. Finally, we will learn how embracing a growth mindset can be a game changer for you, the leader AND the people in your charge.  Expect a high-energy, fast-paced workshop that:

  • Allows you to hit the pause button and focus on yourself as you work to develop your people (staff and volunteers) in a way that helps them grow in their role and prepare for what’s next;
  • Defines the importance of effective communication as we explore styles, mediums, and the intention behind the interaction;
  • Explore the importance of delegation and how it feels to successfully delegate, as well as what happens after you delegate so you can effectively empower your people to get the job done.

Suggested participants: This 3-part series and each session are for anyone who manages others: Executive Directors, nonprofit managers, volunteer leaders, and Boards
Date and Time:  Friday, April 14th, 9:00am – 12:00pm

Virtual Workshop: See Difficult Conversations as Growth Opportunities

Session 2 in Leaders Leading Others Workshop Series

Tuesday, June 20th, 9:00am – 10:30am
On Zoom
Trainer: Becky Lunders of teamWorks
Cost: $30 – CNL Members;
$40 – Not-Yet-Members

We hear lots of talk about “holding people accountable,” and that has varying degrees of success in the nonprofit sector. While vital for getting work done, I like to flip it to “leading accountable people” where people hold themselves accountable for the work they do. When something isn’t working, it demands a conversation (not a text message!) and an opportunity for everyone to feel heard. To that end, this session will:

  • Examine the importance of a fully functioning team and the role trust plays;
  • Experience common scenarios that keep teams from achieving great results;
  • Highlight simple tools to help you have those tough conversations so they can be successful, and you can sleep well knowing the work gets done.

Suggested participants: This session is for anyone who manages others: Executive Directors, nonprofit managers, volunteer leaders, and Boards
Cost: $30 – CNL Members; $40 – Not-Yet-Members (registration deadline: Friday, June 16th)
Location: Zoom – attendees will receive link after registration and payment are confirmed
