#GivingTuesday on Dec. 1

#GivingTuesday on December 1  Benefits Local Nonprofits in Nevada County

Center for Nonprofit Leadership Helps Member Organizations Participate, Prepare for One-day Event

We have a holiday for giving thanks, and two huge shopping days that follow for getting deals.

Another special day is grabbing some attention and focuses on giving to others — #GivingTuesday.

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership of Nevada County is asking charities, businesses and individuals to celebrate and embrace #GivingTuesday on Dec. 1. The mini-holiday, which started in New York City in 2012, is much different than consumer-focused Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but along the same lines as Thanksgiving.

#GivingTuesday – the Tuesday after the Thanksgiving weekend – serves as a celebratory, fully connected day to kick off the giving season, when many make their holiday and end-of-year charitable gifts.

It celebrates how Americans can do more with their wallets than just shop – and that we can give as good as we get.

This year, CNL is excited to continue our push for a Nevada County tradition:  The second annual #GivingTuesday Nonprofit Wish List!

2015-Churchill-quote-300x300“GivingTuesday is truly about giving back to the community and getting involved,” said Susie Bavo, Chair for Center for Nonprofit Leadership. “The special day also highlights charities, what nonprofits need and how people can help, whether it’s donating money or spending time volunteering.” The one-day event will educate the community about charitable giving and local nonprofits’ efforts, from Animal Save to United Way of Nevada County.

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership will coordinate this marketing effort for #GivingTuesday on behalf of its 60+ member organizations. The nonprofit will produce the Nonprofit Wish List for inclusion in The Union newspaper on#GivingTuesday, December 1 and also direct people to the CNL membership page where they can view the Wish List year round.

“We want to help our members with their never-ending efforts to provide much-needed services to residents,” Bavo said. “Nevada County is a very charitable and giving community, and we want to make it as easy as possible for nonprofits and residents to connect on #GivingTuesday – and every day.”

How can local nonprofits get involved with #GivingTuesday?

  •  Promote #GivingTuesday on Facebook and Twitter, and encourage residents to make their donations at www.cnlsierra.org. CNL members are committed to helping each other year-round, but especially during #GivingTuesday.
  • Establish an online donation app or link on your website, which greatly increases the likelihood for donations. PayPal is an easy-to-use service, but other online providers are also available.
  • Announce a fundraising goal and detail how the money will be used. Donors appreciate knowing how their donations are being put to work – and the transparency.
  • Build a network of online ambassadors to share information about your nonprofit and #GivingTuesday via Facebook, Twitter and in person. Also, encourage everyone, from the director and staff to volunteers, to promote your organization in person or through social media. Establish a couple of Facebook posts and tweets (on Twitter) that supporters can use.

Check www.GivingTuesday.org for more ideas and information about how to participate.

“Nevada County residents have always been extremely generous with their donations and volunteer efforts, but we’re also a community with great need that never goes away,” Bavo said.  Nonprofits interested in the Center for Nonprofit Leadership and #GivingTuesday should call 530-265-6500 or email info@cnlsierra.org to become a member or check their membership status and ensure the listing as part of #GivingTuesday.
