Mission & Purpose:
Child Advocates of Nevada County helps children who may have been neglected or abused to grow up safely, securely, and ready for the future.  The organization provides training for qualified volunteers to become Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).  Through advocacy, education, and child abuse prevention services, Child Advocates work to ensure that all of Nevada County’s children can grow up in safe, nurturing, and permanent homes.

Success Story:
Child Advocates help children (and parents too!) who have been traumatized by abuse or neglect to understand that they matter, are worthy of respect and how they make a difference in the world. Child Advocate staff and volunteers build on each child’s strengths to help children see the world differently and embrace new possibilities to contribute to their community in a meaningful way.  One of our CASAs is currently helping a child adjust to a new preschool after being dismissed from several day care sites for aggressive behavior. The CASA is helping this child relate to others, strengthen his impulse control and understand what will be expected of him in  kindergarten.  In addition, Child Advocates support parents through a home visits initiative to help parents become the parents they know their children deserve. One of the mothers enrolled in the home visitation program said it best; “It’s hard to imagine it getting any better! My home visitor has been great – always flexible with work schedule, location changes, and adaptable in response to my changing needs (job loss, housing loss, relationship issues, significant depression, education in child development) every step along the way! I love her and so does my daughter.”

How our organization benefits from being a member of CNL:
CNL has helped us at every step. Their training and workshops are always relevant and we apply what we learn. They are a great way to connect with other non-profits. CNL sets the bar high and walks their talk. It has been great to have them as a role model and a resource. There is so much advice out there for non-profits, and it is nice that they are right in our backyard and eager to meet our local needs.
