Anyone who lives in or visits Nevada County knows it’s a special place; and it’s not just the beautiful scenery and iconic history.  Our community is rich with nonprofit organizations that enhance our lives every day with essential community services that help people to connect, grow and thrive. These organizations are threads in the fabric that make Nevada County so special.

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership provides educational programming and leadership development opportunities; CNL also advocates for our local nonprofit sector, and cultivates philanthropy right here in our community to ensure these organizations have access to nonprofit management best practices and technical support resources.  Check out our Faces of Philanthropy series of articles on the various ways philanthropy is interwoven into our community.

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership
The Center for Nonprofit Leadership (CNL) is a member-based resource center for nonprofit organizations and individuals in Nevada County and beyond, providing seminars, workshops, peer learning and networking opportunities.  CNL is committed to helping nonprofits become effective and well-managed organizations, incorporating nonprofit best practices and industry standards for quality programming, transparency and sustainability.

Nevada County Pets in Need
The mission of Nevada County Pets In Need (NCPIN) is to provide financial assistance with pet food and veterinary care to residents of Nevada County.

By committing ourselves to this mission, we believe that we will help create a community that is more compassionate to all pets and people.

Sammie’s Friends
The mission of Sammie’s Friends is to provide medical care for the animals at the Nevada County Animal Shelter, making them adoptable, and to support other disadvantaged animals in Nevada County that, without help, would continue to suffer or would be euthanized. Sammie’s Friends has saved the lives of 28,000 animals and reduced the euthanasia rate from 68% to less than 1%.

Wildlife Rehabilitation & Release
Starving Hawks – Orphaned Baby Squirrels and Rabbits – Injured Songbirds – or Bats Unable to Fly.  Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release (WR&R) treats over 1000 injured or orphaned wild animals and birds each year and releases them back into the wild.  As an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, WR&R seeks donations for food, medication, vet bills and caging for orphaned and injured wildlife.

$25 will provide food for a Great Horned Owl for half a month or food for a nest of baby songbirds for a season
$250 will purchase the supplies needed to build a Squirrel release cage or veterinary costs for injured wildlife
$500 will purchase a new flight cage so that injured Songbirds to test their wings before release or for veterinary costs for a Bald Eagle

The Auburn Symphony
The Auburn Symphony’s mission is to enrich and engage our community, across all generations, through the gift of music.  We’re a small town with a big sound…we bring timeless classical music to the Sierra foothills and through our outreach programs reach thousands of students and our precious senior communities, planting the seeds or harvesting the fruit of a lifelong appreciation of music.

Nevada City Film Festival

Nevada County Arts Council

Nevada County Historical Society

North Star Historic Conservancy
The North Star House, designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, is a classic Arts & Crafts style home and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1905 as a meeting place for investors and visiting dignitaries at the North Star Mine in Grass Valley, CA.

The North Star Historic Conservancy is restoring the house to its original elegance and design. We are committed to preserving and presenting the history of the North Star Mine, North Star House, and key historical people. Bright Futures for Youth is a nonprofit committed to making a life-changing difference for children and young adults in Nevada County. Bright Futures for Youth – created by the merger of The Friendship and NEO Youth Center – has three programs: The Friendship Club, founded in 1995, NEO Youth Center founded in 2008, and SAFE, launched in 2019 to help youth experiencing homelessness.
