Nonprofit board members are often perplexed when their initial vision of joining the board is deflated with the reality of unproductive ways in which the board and staff work together. Some common themes include a lack of clarity around the Board’s role, “rogue” board members, disconnects between vision and strategy (among board members and between staff and board), and questions around accountability and governance. Poor practices in managing the executive director can also hinder the organization’s overall performance.
When Board members are on the same page and in harmony with the staff leadership team, anything is possible, but the converse brings wasted time, energy, and opportunity.
This workshop will help board members understand how to better work as a unit, understand the different roles and perspectives the board should bring to its work, and how to combine these efforts to effectively advocate for and generously represent your organization’s mission. It will also address what the oversight of an executive director should include and will provide tools and resources to assist in that work.
