Info Session: Insurance for Nonprofits

The leadership of a nonprofit organization has many responsibilities beyond overseeing and supporting the organizational mission and vision. One very important duty is to ensure that the organization and its board members are protected from risk and liability.  CNL is holding an Info Session on strategy and approach to managing a nonprofit’s insurance program — the collection of coverages purchased by an organization. If you have questions about what insurance your organization needs and what those coverages do or don’t do for your nonprofit – please join us.  Local insurance broker, Kevin Cookson of Cookson & Bowman Insurance Services, will be addressing the following coverages:

  • General Liability
  • Property
  • Auto
  • Worker’s Compensation
  • Directors & Officers
  • Crime
  • EPLI – Employment Practices Liability insurance – designed to protect from law suits by employees, current, former and potential
  • Cyber
  • Professional Liability
  • Accident Insurance

There will be time for question and answer along with claims examples and scenarios of potential instances wherein directors could face personal liability.

Thursday, May 28th, from 8:00am – 9:30am including a Question & Answer period

Looking for Volunteers? Two Great Opportunities to Find Them

Nevada Co. Reads & Writes Event and VolunteerNevadaCounty.org

Volunteers who donate their expertise, skills and time are the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations, from the community animal shelter to performing and visual arts groups. But connecting volunteers – from teenagers to seniors – with organizations can be difficult. group

CNL would like to share two opportunities that can do just that!

Nevada County Reads & Writes (NCRW) is the annual community reads program in Nevada County. This year’s book selection, Trash by Andy Mulligan, has many themes, but one predominant theme concerns volunteerism and helping others. The main public event for NCRW will reflect that. The Foothills Event Center has generously donated their space on Wednesday evening, March 11 for the celebration of reading and volunteerism in our community.

Local nonprofits are being invited to host tables that offer information about their organizations, particularly volunteer opportunities. There is no charge for nonprofits, and the event is free to the public. During the month of April, the Library will be tallying volunteer hours done in the “name” of NCRW and working towards a goal, so this is a great way to connect people with organizations.

Set-up will be at 5 PM, with the event running from 5:30 to 7. Tables will be provided so nonprofits can just show up, put out promotional materials, eat some free refreshments, and talk to people about their volunteer opportunities. There will be a short fashion show by Haute Trash, but plenty of time for people to mingle.

Please contact Laura Pappani, County Librarian (530.265.7078) ASAP if you are interested in participating or have any questions.

Another, ongoing way to continue to find and engage volunteers is through RSVP of Nevada County, a CNL member organization. They connect residents looking for volunteer opportunities with nonprofits in the region. RSVP recently debuted their website VolunteerNevadaCounty.org. The matchmaking site benefits nonprofits, which are always looking for help, and residents of all ages who are seeking meaningful volunteer efforts to improve the quality of life in Nevada County.

Executive directors and staff along with potential volunteers can learn more about RSVP by calling 530.271.0255 or visiting online at volunteernevadacounty.org.

We here at CNL hope these effort toward more volunteerism in our community prove fruitful for both residents and organizations alike.

Donating Energy and Time to Local Nonprofits Pays Off for Young Adults

by Susie Bavo,  Chaiman of the Board of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership
Published in The Union,  June 18, 2014

Welcome to summer.

Barbecues, baseball games, family trips and last-minute getaways with friends.

Summer is a chance to enjoy a little, and live a lot.

For many college and high school students, the long-awaited break is also an opportunity to earn some money or enroll in summer school – or possibly both.

Along with the dollars and the education, we would like to encourage students to consider embracing another experience, one that pays off in many ways – volunteering.

Community service – the more modern term for volunteering – is an excellent opportunity for teenagers and young adults to give back to their community, help others and learn new skills.

And if you’re planning to attend college, an application with community service experience can make the difference between being accepted or rejected. Everyone benefits from volunteering.

In fact, almost 60 percent of the 400 senior projects completed this year at Nevada Union High School were considered community service. But even many students who were not planning to attend college donated their energy and time to local organizations.

Quite simply, community service is just part of the curriculum, like Algebra and American Literature, for many high school students.

For college students, community service offers hands-on experience and the opportunity to learn new skills. Maybe even find a career or an overlooked talent.

So, how should an ambitious, community-minded and hard-working student get started in volunteering?

First, consider what you enjoy, like taking care of animals or teaching children. Or maybe it’s more about completing a project, such as building a house for a low-income family or developing a new program.

Then, look for an organization that meets your interests, skills or something you would like to learn.

Nevada County has hundreds of nonprofits, from organizations that promote the arts to those that protect the environment, and just about everything in between.

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership has more than 50 member organizations — from AnimalSave (Golden Empire Humane Society) to United Way of Nevada County – that could benefit from dedicated and energetic volunteers. The Center’s members are more than worthy nonprofits, with community-focused board members, experienced executive directors and professional staffs. Each would benefit from your effort, skills and talent.

So, when school ends and summer starts, please consider volunteering. It’s an effort where everyone wins – the community, a deserving nonprofit and especially you.
