Virtual Workshop: See Difficult Conversations as Growth Opportunities

Session 2 in Leaders Leading Others Workshop Series

Tuesday, June 20th, 9:00am – 10:30am
On Zoom
Trainer: Becky Lunders of teamWorks
Cost: $30 – CNL Members;
$40 – Not-Yet-Members

We hear lots of talk about “holding people accountable,” and that has varying degrees of success in the nonprofit sector. While vital for getting work done, I like to flip it to “leading accountable people” where people hold themselves accountable for the work they do. When something isn’t working, it demands a conversation (not a text message!) and an opportunity for everyone to feel heard. To that end, this session will:

  • Examine the importance of a fully functioning team and the role trust plays;
  • Experience common scenarios that keep teams from achieving great results;
  • Highlight simple tools to help you have those tough conversations so they can be successful, and you can sleep well knowing the work gets done.

Suggested participants: This session is for anyone who manages others: Executive Directors, nonprofit managers, volunteer leaders, and Boards
Cost: $30 – CNL Members; $40 – Not-Yet-Members (registration deadline: Friday, June 16th)
Location: Zoom – attendees will receive link after registration and payment are confirmed

Virtual Workshop: Meaningful Meetings

Session 3 in Leaders Leading Others Workshop Series

Wednesday, September 6th, 9:00am – 10:30am
On Zoom
Trainer: Becky Lunders of teamWorks
Cost: $30 – CNL Members;
$40 – Not-Yet-Members

Increase attendance and engagement at your meetings, no matter if they are virtual or in-person, with staff or with volunteers. Boring, predictable meetings garner low attendance and apathy.  Meaningful meetings produce energy and results. By understanding what needs to be a meeting (and what could have been an email!), leaders can create an experience that doubles as team building. In this session, you’ll

  • Learn strategies to help you create meetings that foster enthusiasm, connection, and collaboration;
  • Experience how it feels to be an active participant rather than a bored bystander;
  • Outline the key components of a good meeting with clear outcomes and expectations.

Suggested participants: This session is for anyone who manages others: Executive Directors, nonprofit managers, volunteer leaders, and Boards
Date and Time:  Wednesday, September 6th, 9:00am – 10:30am
Cost: $30 – CNL Members; $40 – Not-Yet-Members (registration deadline: Monday, September 4th)

Workshop: Prepare for People

Both staff members and volunteers can maximize your organization’s impact and most often touch every aspect of your mission.

With the Community Volunteer & Job Fair – Passion in Action around the corner, CNL wants all organizations participating to be prepared to engage community members in their work and welcome them to a program that will orient them, train them and retain them. Our first event last fall was a good start and this year’s event will be even better!

Each organization that registers for space at the Volunteer & Job Fair will receive free attendance for one member of their team to this pre-fair training opportunity. Additional attendees can also join for the modest fee of $25 each.

When: Wednesday, April 26th
9:00am – 11:00am
Where: Bright Futures for Youth, 3rd Floor
200 Litton Drive, Grass Valley, CA
Cost: $25

Delegation is a critical leadership development tactic that helps teams build capacity and reduce burnout. If done well, it can take an organization from where it is to where it wants to be. If done poorly, staff and volunteers feel like they are on their own and sometimes even abandoned. This session will also address the need for leaders to engage in effective communication, regardless of the type of team, be they staff, board or volunteers. Finally, we will learn how embracing a growth mindset can be a game changer for you, the leader AND the people in your charge.  Expect a high-energy, fast-paced workshop that:

  • Allows you to hit the pause button and focus on yourself as you work to develop your people (staff and volunteers) in a way that helps them grow in their role and prepare for what’s next;
  • Defines the importance of effective communication as we explore styles, mediums, and the intention behind the interaction;
  • Explore the importance of delegation and how it feels to successfully delegate, as well as what happens after you delegate so you can effectively empower your people to get the job done.

On Zoom
Trainer: Allison Stelly

We all love our major donors and our big grants.. but what happens when a funder’s priorities shift and you don’t get the expected renewal? Or what if you’re a newer organization and don’t yet have those major funders?

Being overly reliant on major donors or grant funding can put an organization in a vulnerable position, and it also means that a handful of individuals hold an awful lot of power in determining the direction of your work.

With grassroots fundraising, we focus on raising a lot of small gifts from a lot of people. We think about the number of gifts as opposed to the size of the gifts. We want to build a broad base of support and bring many people into engagement with our organizations.

  • It’s about raising funds directly from our communities.
  • It’s empowering, as anyone – even people impacted by the work we’re doing – can find a way to be involved in our great causes.
  • It shifts the balance of power and helps your organization to be more sustainable AND nimble!
  • It stems from social justice and movement-based organizations but has relevance for all of us, and especially as more and more of our organizations are incorporating a justice lens.
  • Finally, it has a low barrier to entry for organizations – grassroots fundraising can be done by anyone, with very little cost – and rapid payoff. While it can be time intensive, you can see funds quickly, as opposed to waiting a year for a grant to come in.

In this 90 minute workshop, we’ll talk through the various steps to building your grassroots fundraising strategy, which might include peer-to-peer campaigns, giving days, social media, direct mail, and phone banking or text banking. We’ll write calls to action together, we’ll talk about our biggest fundraising fears, we’ll talk about how to find those potential supporters, and we’ll start making a plan.
We hope you’ll join us to learn about adding grassroots fundraising to your toolbox – we want to see all of our causes grow bigger, stronger, and better than ever in 2023!
